Care for oil-tanned leather items:

Your product is made of oil-tanned leather.  Oil-tanned leather is tanned using oils and wax, making it very pliable – easy for me to work with & providing you with a soft & flexible product – and water resistant! (Please note that I said resistant – please try to avoid bringing it with you to swim!)

Oil-tanned leather holds its oils for a long time, so regular conditioning is not required.  If down the road, you feel as though the leather is becoming slightly more stiff, dry, or cracked, you can use a leather conditioner or even olive oil.  Apply a small amount onto a soft cloth and apply in a circular motion over the entire section of leather.  Buff with a soft, dry cloth and air dry before use.

If you get the oil-tanned leather dirty, the best thing is to use a soft, wet cloth to gently work the mess off. If just water doesn’t do the trick, they do make leather cleaner and conditioners that will help! And if cleaning the leather makes it slightly more stiff, dry, or cracked, refer to the paragraph above this!

Oil-tanned leather sounds great, right? There is one kicker: it scratches & blemishes easily.  And some kinds of oil-tanned leather scratches even more easily than others.  However! Oil-tanned leather IS great, because it is so forgiving of the blemishes.  All you need is some heat and either your finger or a soft, dry cloth to rub out a scratch.  It takes some elbow grease, but not too much otherwise you may burnish (too much heat!) the leather.  And again, after correcting the blemishes, if you feel like the leather is becoming slightly more stiff, dry, or cracked, refer to two paragraphs above this!

Leather Card Wallet

I had the privilege of welcoming an MSU-Bozeman film class group into my home to video the process of creating a leather card wallet from start to finish. My cousin, a member of the group, shared with me her final product from their footage. Thanks, Erin, for sharing!
